By the time they reached the ballroom, Alex was almost swooning. It was not that she had put her arm through his, that she was touching him. Not this time. It was because of how the warm scent of his body pervaded the mask over her eyes. It made her feel as though her face was cradled against the bare skin of his chest. The picture conjured up by that masculine scent was so powerful, so erotic, that all her senses were tumbling chaotically. When he spoke to her, she was unable to understand or respond to his words. She was floating.
‘Are you quite well, madam?’ He put his free hand over hers, where it lay loosely on his arm. His voice was filled with concern.
She forced herself back to earth, trying to take only the shallowest of breaths so that his scent would cease to ensnare her traitorous body. ‘I…I am a little warm, sir. That is all.’
He pressed her fingers lightly. ‘If you will allow, I shall fetch you a cooling drink before we venture on to the dance floor. A glass of champagne, perhaps?’
‘No!’ The word was torn from her. The thought of champagne, and the risks of losing even more control of her faculties, had brought her back down to earth with a jolt. ‘No, thank you, sir,’ she said, rather more politely. ‘I find that champagne is not refreshing when one is suffering from the heat. I should much prefer lemonade.’
‘As you wish.’
She had assumed he would leave her where she stood, at the side of the ballroom, in order to fetch it for her. But he did not.
He nodded in the direction of a side door. ‘I believe the refreshment room is through there. Shall we go together?’ There was just a hint of a smile at the corners of his eyes. ‘Much as I desire to serve you, madam, I am not about to leave you here alone. I have you, and I plan to keep you, at least until you grant me the honour of one dance. You do waltz, I trust?’
The fire in her lower limbs grew white hot. Oh yes, she waltzed. But never yet with a man who could wreak such havoc with all her senses. ‘I…I—’
‘Excellent. I was not sure that the new fashion had yet reached the north. Do you attend many balls in Scotland?’ He was leading her across the floor to the refreshment room as he spoke.
Alex forced herself to concentrate on his words, ignoring the touch, the scent of him. He had been at least as aroused as she. If he could now control his ardour enough to sound like any gentleman at a ball, she should be able to do so, too. ‘I have not told you that I come from Scotland, sir. You shall not gull me so easily into betraying my secrets.’
‘I see that I must show a great deal more guile if I am to discover what I wish to know.
